We continue on in our series of sleepers in the Sun Belt Conference to watch, with the Arkansas State Red Wolves.
Arkansas State is currently on a five game winning streak, which includes a victory on Thursday November 8th, over Louisiana-Monroe.
Their 45-23 victory vaulted the Red Wolves into first place in the Sun Belt Conference.
Led by Senior QB Ryan Aplin, Arkansas State has a few stand out players, that will certainly see time at the next level of their careers.
We are going to look at those players today.
WR Josh Jarboe | 6-3, 215 lbs.
Josh Jarboe has an ideal frame for the next level at 6-3, 215 lbs. Displayed solid blocking ability in the run game, against at times, smaller DB's. Although it is nice to see a WR executing good blocks in the run game.
Showed good come back awareness when the QB was in trouble. Made two nice adjustments coming back to the ball to produce positive yardage out of nothing. Breaking off his routes and coming back to the ball.
Jarboe shows good toughness making grabs knowing the big hit was coming and maintaining possession of the ball. His size obviously helps with this skill as well. Has very good deep speed and combines that for big YAC's.
Does need to improve on his breaks off LOS. All routes should look the same five yards off the LOS. Overall, Jarboe has nice size and toughness for the next level with very good blocking skills as well as football IQ at the position.
WR Taylor Stockemer | 6-4, 210 lbs.
While more buzz is on Josh Jarboe heading into the 2012 season, it’s important to remember that its Stockemer is the receiver who has a better connection with QB Ryan Aplin.
So why are many overlooking Stockemer? No one is quite sure, as he was averaging of 15.8 yards per catch in 2011, and his seven TD's led all Red Wolves receivers. While Jarboe may be the name everybody knows now, it will be Stockemer who is the one to watch.
Stockemer seems to come up with big play catches right when Aplin and Arkansas State needs them. A very sure handed WR, he seems to always high point the ball on throws in traffic, and comes down with the ball.
Although he missed three games this season due to injuries. He is still averaging 15 YPC on 20 receptions for 300 yards and 2 TD's. Not blazing fast, which may cause him to be over looked by some NFL teams. He is a very sure handed WR with a very good frame for the next level.
LB Nathan Herrold | 6-3, 235 lbs.
The returning leader of the Red Wolves defense, Senior Herrold returns as the leading returning tackler from 2011, and will once again be counted on to make big plays from his position. Leading the team in 2012 in tackles yet again, with a combined 89 tackles (36ua & 53a) with 7 TFL, 2 FF and 2 INTs.
A good athletic linebacker, Herrold can line up for all three downs and does a nice job against both running and passing plays.
Herrold has become a more controlled LB last season for the Red Wolves. He certainly made more plays and force even more plays to change their directions or alter the design of the play.
Herrold may not be a top NFL prospect, however he is a very productive and smart LB who seemingly is always in the right position when the defense needs him to be.
