An ACC Showdown, Close Calls for Top Teams & A Heisman Hopeful

Week four of the college football season saw a mega match up with two of the top teams in the ACC, Florida State and Clemson. A rivalry, quickly becoming one of the best in college football.

Last season saw Clemson's wide receiver Sammy Watkins, have an out standing day against the secondary of the Seminoles. Torching them time and time again. Watkins may have had another big day against the No. 4 team in the country.

However, the outcome would be different in 2012 for Florida State.

After trading scores through the first quarter, Clemosn began to pull away in the third quarter after running back Andre Ellington scored on a 52-yard pass to make the score 28-14 for Clemson.

The Seminoles would go on to score two unanswerd touch downs to pull within three of the Tigers. With less than three minutes to go before the fourth quarter. Florida State would score again, when EJ Manuel would find Rodney Smith for a 29-yard score and gave the Seminoles their first lead of the game.

Clemson, would never recover and would not score again until the two minute warning. By then, it was too little too late. The Seminoles would go on to hang nearly 50 points on Clemson, winning the game 49-37 and claim their spot, a top the ACC.

LSU, the No. 2 team in the country, had a much tighter game than anyone would have expected against a one win Auburn team that has little to cheer about so far in 2012.

After LSU would get it's first score off of their own turnover, that would lead to a safety. Auburn would actually lead the game at half time, 10-9.

In a game that saw Auburn gain only 183 total yards of offense to LSU's 351. A final score of 12-10 was far from what many thought this game could produce.

A defensive game to say the least. Neither quarterback showed any sort of control or ability to lead their teams down the field. Zach Mettenberger (LSU) finished the game 15 of 27 for 169 yards and zero TD's.

Auburn's signal caller, Kiehl Frazier would finish with a very unimpressive stat line of 13 of 22 for 97 yards and zero TD's.

Neither team had any player over the 100 yard mark in the running game. Though LSU was able to total 182 yards of rushing against the Tiger's defense.

LSU's performance, though in a conference game, will most certainly cost them in the rankings to come out soon this Sunday. Both the No. 1 team Alabama, and No. 3 team Oregon, rolled their opponents by a combined 89-7.

Another top team that put a lot of teams on notice was the West Virginia Mountaineers. Led by their Heisman hopeful QB Geno Smith, West Virginia looked solid against their border rivals, Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

Smith led the Mountaineers to a 3-0 start after racking up another glimmering stat line to add to his Heisman hype. He finished the game 30 for 43, 338 yards and three TD's. All three TD's going to one receiver, Tavon Austin.

Austin, of course will start to rise up many boards after his performance against Maryland, as well as his first three games of the year.

The Baltimore, MD. native, has posted 34 receptions for 345 yards and 5 TD's in his first three games of 2012. He is averaging 11 catches and 115 yards per game. The seniors only knock, could be his frame at 5', 9" and 174 lbs.

Ups and downs for teams throughout the first four weeks of the season have seen the rankings take on a different look, nearly every week so far in 2012.

I see no reason, the same trend does not stay the same, this week.
